Roan Mountain, TN - Hiking, camping, fishing, etc. are available at Roan Mtn. State Park. The Appalachian Trail runs along the top of the mountains through the Cherokee National Forest. Naturally occurring Rhododendron gardens,which bloom in mid- to late June, can also be found near the summit. A paved walking trail provides access to the gardens.
Appalachian Trail - numerous trailheads are located in the region
Laurel Falls (trailhead is located off Hwy 321 in Hampton) - popular hiking area that joins the Appalachian Trail and leads to a waterfall
Watauga Lake - swimming, boating, fishing and numerous picnic areas; best access areas are: Watauga Dam, Watauga Point and Shook Branch
Watauga River - fishing (trophy trout stream), rafting and kayaking (Note: The Watauga is a fairly tame river, with the most active rapids only at around Class 3. Still, caution must be exercised since the flow is regulated by a nearby TVA dam and water levels may rise rapidly in a short period of time.)

Virginia Creeper Trail - hiking, biking, bike rentals (old railroad bed--excellent place for biking), best access points are Abingdon and Damascus, Virginia (approximately 45 min. to 1 hour from Elizabethton)
